The Community Libraries of Providence offer a slew of free programming every week for kids and adults at their nine locations around the city. Each month, we highlight a few of these events. In a conversation with afternoon host Mareva Lindo, Library Director Cheryl Space shared with us what’s on the docket in February.
Kazoo 101 and the High Tone Jug Band, Feb. 3, 5:30-7 p.m. at Fox Point Library
Learn how to play the kazoo, and play along right afterwards with the High Tone Jug Band. Kazoos provided – and other instruments are welcome, too. If you can’t make it this month, mark your calendar: this happens the first Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at the Fox Point Library.
Builder's Club, Feb. 3, 4-7:30 p.m. at Knight Memorial Library
This all-volunteer group builds things to help our communities. This time, you can learn how to build tent heater stoves for people living in tents. The club will build heaters from 4-6 p.m., and meet from 6-7:30 p.m. to talk about current and future projects.
Poke-It Felting with Stacey Grant, Feb. 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Washington Park Library
Stacey Grant is the artist behind Poke-It Felting. In celebration of the return of the TV show “Outlander,” she’s leading a 2-D needle-felted wool painting workshop inspired by Scotland’s thistle and a shimmering dragonfly in flight. For adults only.
Introduction to Tufting | Feb. 14 and 28, 1-5:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Library
Learn how to tuft a small rug! These are two intensive workshops taking place Feb. 14 and 28 from 1-5 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Library. Registration required.
Providence Children's Film Festival | Ongoing
The Mount Pleasant Library is one of the official screening locations for the Providence Children’s Film Festival. Some of the highlights:
- Feb. 20: Screening of the new animated comedy “The Pout-Pout Fish,” before its nationwide premier March 20
- Feb. 21 and 22: A line-up of events that includes animated films from Portugal and Spain; animations about solving problems and overcoming obstacles; a film about a South African boy who raises an ostrich from an egg; and a British film about a young girl growing a giant pumpkin to compete in the town's giant pumpkin contest.
- Both mornings and afternoons, there are special animation workshops for kids using the Rhode Island-made Gif-o-Graf, an all-in-one animation station.
Some events require advance registration. All tickets are "give what you can" to provide access for all.
