The many libraries of Rhode Island and the South Coast offer countless programs and events for kids and adults, and each month we highlight what’s happening at one library. This time, we revisit the Community Libraries of Providence.
Summer reading programs
There are many ways libraries are encouraging kids to read this summer, including:
- ReadMobile in the parks: Free books, games, and activities five days a week, throughout the city, starting July 7. And if you’re 18 years old or under, enjoy a free meal!
- Summer Scavenger Hunt: Pick up a passport at any of the Community Libraries of Providence (or one of many other libraries participating throughout Rhode Island), and visit libraries around the state to find the “Good Egg” or the “Bad Seed.” The more you find, the more raffle tickets you earn!
Everyone who finishes the summer reading program will get two free tickets to the Rhode Island FC soccer game Sept. 30!
Club Zine at Rochambeau Library, July 15, 5-6:30 p.m.
Your zine is your canvas. Bring your own project, start something new, or browse the library’s zine collection. For ages 13-18. All materials provided.
Providence Mayoral Forums: Meet the candidates
The libraries are hosting three mayoral debates throughout July and August. It’s your chance to meet and hear from four of the candidates: David Morales, Brett Smiley, Dave Talan and Allen Waters (fifth candidate Charles Sherman is unavailable). All will be moderated by the League of Women Voters of Providence, and live-streamed on CLPVD’s YouTube channel. Schedule:
- July 20, 6-7:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Library
- July 23, 6-7:30 p.m. at Rochambeau Library
- August 4, 6-7:30 p.m. at South Providence Library

Strange Chronicles Book Club, Rochambeau Library, third Thursdays, 6-7 p.m.
This speculative horror book club will be discussing “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick on July 16. Up next: “The Hearing Trumpet” by Leonora Carrington. No signup necessary – just pick up the book at your local library and drop in.
