The many libraries of Rhode Island and the South Coast offer countless programs and events for kids and adults, and each month we highlight what’s happening at one library – or in this case, nine! For October, we’re revisiting the Community Libraries of Providence.
Performances:
- Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at Washington Park Library, Oct. 22, 5-7:30 p.m. Enjoy a live mariachi band, maracas crafting, Spanish story time, food, and more.
- Sidy Maiga performance at Mount Pleasant Library, Oct. 21, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The Rhode-Island based Malian master djembe artist blends West African rhythms with Latin, blues and Brazilian influences. RSVP required.
Crafting workshops:
- Candle Making Workshop at Smith Hill Library, Oct. 14, 6-7:30 p.m. Learn how to make candles from an expert. The workshop is free and materials are provided. Registration required.
- "Plant to Pigment" at the Rochambeau Library, Oct. 17, 1-4 p.m. Turn plants into watercolor paint through a process called “laking,” and take the paint home with you. Registration required.
- Papier-mâché mask making at South Providence Library, every Wednesday in October, 2-4:30 p.m. Make your own mask, just in time for Halloween. For ages 12 and up, with all skill levels welcome.
Special sales:
- Friends Book Sale & Thrift Shop at the Mt. Pleasant Library, Oct. 23 & 24. Shop donated books, winter clothes, holiday decorations, art, crafting materials, toys, and more.
- Friends of Rochambeau Library Big Fall Book Sale, Oct. 29-31. The popular biannual sale is back. It’s your opportunity to browse a selection of more than 10,000 donated books of all genres, with a special collection of WWII and military history this time around. Prices range from 50 cents to $2 – or go on Halloween for “$5 fill a bag day.”
Banned Book Club, Oct. 19 & Nov. 16, 6-7:30 p.m. at Knight Memorial Library
This month and next, the focus is “The Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie – an author who has spent most of the last 40 years in safe houses after the backlash to this controversial work of early magical realism. No sign-up necessary.
