The lineup includes visiting Scottish authors, tabletop gaming, film and a monthly book club for people in their 20s and 30s

From Dungeons & Dragons campaigns to a centuries-old fight for justice for accused witches, the East Providence Public Library has an eclectic September calendar.

For our monthly look at what’s happening at local libraries, we talked with East Providence Public Library Director Meredith Bonds-Harmon about some of the events worth checking out — including a book club designed to help people in their 20s and 30s make new connections.

Interview highlights

Justice for Witches

Meredith Bonds-Harmon: Claire Mitchell and Zoey Venditozzi are coming to us from Scotland related to their book, “How to Kill a Witch, A Guide for the Patriarchy,” and the mission that the two of them have as a part of their organization, the Witches of Scotland. 4,000 mostly women were convicted of being witches. This was between the 1500s and 1700s. And 2,500 were executed. So, this is a big part of Scotland's history and something that they're really shining a spotlight on. Their goal is to get an apology, a pardon, and a memorial. We're really honored to have them with us, related to this book and their mission and to support the work they're doing.

When: Monday, Sep. 28, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

A Plethora of D&D

Bonds-Harmon: We have adults who are playing and interested in joining a D&D community, as well as teenagers. And what's really magical about those groups is the sense of community that they create. There are people who commit to the game and the person who is leading it, and there's all of this fantastic storytelling and problem-solving and critical thinking. And essentially just a small community of people, working and playing together. It's really lovely and it's a nice alignment with the library mission because we seek to be a welcoming, safe community place. So within this game opportunity that we create, people can also do that on a small scale.

Documentary Screening: “AI Revolution”

Bonds-Harmon: Every month we select a timely, relevant, interesting documentary, but what we're really doing is we're promoting the streaming service Kanopy. I'm not sure that many people know that the public library has a film streaming service that you can access with your library card, but this one is really cool. It has classic cinema, but it also has indie films, documentaries, and foreign films, even educational videos. And you have access to all of that with your library card.

When: Wednesday, Sep. 30, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Where: Fuller Creative Learning Center, 260 Dover Ave, East Providence

20s & 30s Book Club

Bonds-Harmon: This is a book club that has two purposes. The first, of course, as any traditional book club would have, is the opportunity for people to come together and talk about a book. But the second purpose is for people of that age range, in their 20s and in their 30s, to have a low-stress, non-digital environment to make new friends, to connect with people and maybe come away with a new connection, which is not always easy to do in our adult lives. And that meets the third Thursday of every month.

When: Thursday, Sep. 17, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Where: Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., East Providence
