From Providence to South Kingstown to Newport, Rhode Island earns James Beard semifinalist honors

Rhode Island’s vibrant culinary scene earned significant recognition Wednesday as the James Beard Foundation unveiled the 2026 semifinalists for its prestigious Restaurant and Chef Awards — often called the Oscars of the food world.

The announcement highlights outstanding chefs and restaurants from across the country and sets the stage for the next round: finalists, to be announced March 31. Winners will be celebrated at the awards gala in Chicago on June 15.

Rhode Island establishments and chefs were named across several major categories, showcasing the state’s diversity of talent and innovation in the culinary industry. Being named a semifinalist is itself a significant achievement, offering increased exposure and prestige within the national culinary community.

  • Oberlin — ProvidenceThe acclaimed Providence restaurant, known for its inventive tasting menus and local ingredients, earned a national nod among the country’s top dining destinations. It was previously nominated for the same category in 2024 and 2025.

Last year, Sky Haneul Kim, of Gift Horse in Providence, took home the Northeast title.
