Catch the Crucible in Westerly, feast on local seafood in Newport and enjoy everything from classical music to mariachi performances this weekend

Looking for some tips on what to do this weekend and beyond? We’ve got you covered. Here are a few recommendations from Ocean State Media's afternoon host, Mareva Lindo, and executive producer, James Baumgartner.

The Crucible at Granite Theatre

Arthur Miller’s 1953 play is a fictionalized account of the Salem witch trials of the 1690s. It is widely seen as an allegory for the Red Scare, McCarthyism and the Hollywood blacklist and it’s still relevant to today’s politics. This community theater production in Westerly punches above its weight with some moving performances.

When: On now through October 25 with performances Thursdays - Sundays.
Where: Granite Theatre, 1 Granite Street, Westerly

Proof at URI Theater

This Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning play is about Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased brilliant but mentally ill mathematician. After his death, she must navigate her grief, her estranged sister Claire’s plans for her, and the romantic interest of Hal, a former student of her father’s, all while a potentially groundbreaking mathematical proof is discovered among her father’s papers, forcing her to confront her own potential for both genius and instability. The play explores themes of love, loss, legacy and the elusive nature of truth, blending science with human emotion.

When: Oct. 16 - 25
Where: Fine Arts Center, University of Rhode Island, Kingston

Brahms & Beethoven

The RI Philharmonic celebrates the two Bs of classical music with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor,” Brahms Symphony No. 3 and Hubert Parry’s “Elegy for Brahms.” There’s a casual ‘rush hour’ concert on Friday and then the main performance on Saturday.

Where: The Vets, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence

URI Guitar and Mandolin Festival

The festival starts this Sunday and runs through Sunday the 25th. It features many amazing international performers who are playing concerts and holding workshops. On Wednesday, there’s a performance called “Celebration of Strings,” featuring a string quartet with mandolin and guitar. And the marquee concert on Sunday, Oct. 25, features internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Eliot Fisk

James learned the basics of audio editing while studying music at Missouri State University. He went on to get a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Art at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he created electronic music, video art and internet-based media art. While at RPI, James went on the air for the first time, hosting an electronic music show on Rensselaer's station, WRPI, but his love of radio came from staying up late so he could hear punk rock on KKFI, the community radio station in Kansas City, Missouri.
