Plus: the African American Museum of Rhode Island opens this weekend and Andrew Bird plays with the RI Philharmonic

Looking for some tips on what to do this weekend and beyond? We’ve got you covered. Here are a few recommendations from Ocean State Media’s Mareva Lindo and James Baumgartner.

Clyde’s at Burbage Theatre

The play by Lynn Nottage takes place in the kitchen of a truck-stop sandwich shop run by a staff of people who were formerly incarcerated. MJ Daly plays Clyde, the restaurant’s owner who keeps her staff terrified, even when she’s not on stage. And Jason Quinn gives a standout performance as the philosophical sandwich artist Montrellous. He’s a great storyteller and brings his character to life with a comfortable and grounded physicality that hints at his backstory.

The museum will feature exhibits showcasing the history, stories and culture of the African Diaspora. Its co-founders are hoping the museum will be informative and educational, while fostering a sense of pride for African-Americans in Rhode Island. Curator Melaine Ferdinand-King spoke with Ocean State Media morning host Luis Hernandez to discuss what museum visitors can expect to see.

James learned the basics of audio editing while studying music at Missouri State University. He went on to get a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Art at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he created electronic music, video art and internet-based media art. While at RPI, James went on the air for the first time, hosting an electronic music show on Rensselaer's station, WRPI, but his love of radio came from staying up late so he could hear punk rock on KKFI, the community radio station in Kansas City, Missouri.
