‘Cook the book,’ craft a donut, read to a therapy dog and more at Middletown Public Library

From a workshop on vegetable gardening to a look at the role of women and their wardrobes in the American Revolution, here’s what’s going on this month at the Middletown Public Library

Chloe the Goldendoodle is the dedicated therapy dog for the Middletown Library. She's laying down on a purple blanket while a young person reads a book to her. An adult is giving her skritches because she is a good girl.

The many libraries of Rhode Island and the South Coast offer countless programs and events for kids and adults, and each month we highlight what’s happening at one library. This time: Middletown Public Library.

SPOTLIGHT:

As southern New England commemorates the country’s 250th anniversary, this program will go into a less-covered aspect of the American Revolution: the stories of women who “waged war on multiple fronts,” as well as a look at what those women were wearing and crafting – and what these stories and textiles can tell us about life in New England in the late 18th century. The program will be presented by the Dirty Blue Shirts, who will be dressed in historical costumes, showing reproduction clothing pieces and fabric samples, and sharing images of original pieces. Registration required.

Vegetable gardening workshop, June 4, 6-7 p.m.

Master Gardener Vivian Shaull will teach you how to successfully grow vegetables in your garden, covering which crops to choose, how to plant them, what fertilizer to use, and more. Registration recommended.

Talented Tween Time, June 4, 11 and 18, 6-7 p.m.

This series of crafting events for tweens has a different theme each time, always featuring interactive activities. This month tweens can eat donuts while designing a clay donut, create trinket bowls out of quahogs, and make their own fidget fix box. Registration required.

Read to a therapy dog, June 9 and June 30, 4-5 p.m.

This library has its own dedicated therapy dog, Chloe the Goldendoodle, who visits every few weeks. Wow. You can read to her, or just hang out and give her pets. You have two chances to meet Chloe this month, but make sure to register – there are just 5 seats available for each event!

Get ready for the “Cook the Book” Club, July 9, 6-7 p.m.

It’s a cookbook book club! Say that ten times fast. To get in on this potluck-style book club, you’ll want to grab the cookbook this month, so you can decide on a recipe to try, make at home, and bring to share with the other participants. The next book is: “The Weekday Vegetarians Get Simple” by Jenny Rosenstrach. Registration is required, and opens June 11 at 6 p.m.
