Foulkes and Block discussed affordability, state government and Rhode Island’s future during a forum moderated by Ocean State Media’s Ian Donnis

Rhode Island’s race for governor took center stage Wednesday night as Democratic nominee Helena Foulkes and independent candidate Ken Block met for a policy forum at Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol.

Moderated by Ocean State Media political reporter Ian Donnis, the forum focused on some of the biggest issues facing Rhode Islanders, including housing costs, healthcare, energy bills and the state’s troubled transportation infrastructure.

The candidates found some common ground, including calls for changes at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, while drawing sharper contrasts over housing policy, taxes and reproductive healthcare.

Republican nominee Aaron Guckian had been scheduled to participate but withdrew from the event earlier Wednesday. The Women’s Fund of Rhode Island and the League of Women Voters Rhode Island organized the forum, with Ocean State Media serving as media partner.

The gubernatorial forum follows a decisive win by Foulkes in the Democratic primary earlier this month. The 2026 race is Block’s third bid for the state’s top seat
