The fires are coming back to Providence, a little brighter, and with more riding on them this year.
WaterFire organizers have unveiled the lineup for the 2026 season, announcing eight full lightings along the downtown rivers, along with a mix of partial lightings and smaller “Starts at Sunset” events running from late spring through fall.
The season begins May 30, marking the 500th lighting in WaterFire’s history, and continues through November with a series of themed events tied to holidays and community milestones.
Each full lighting will run from sunset to midnight, featuring more than 80 metal braziers stretching through downtown Providence, along with performances, vendors and installations.
Behind that atmosphere is a large-scale operation, something explored in the PBS series Behind the Braziers, which follows the crews responsible for building, lighting and maintaining the fires. The series highlights the choreography required to keep WaterFire running, from stacking wood and navigating the rivers by boat to timing each ignition with precision.

In addition to these full lightings, the season will include partial lightings and smaller “Starts at Sunset” events throughout the summer and fall.
A milestone year, with pressure behind it

In recent seasons, WaterFire has scaled back amid financial strain, reducing the number of full lightings and programming. The expanded 2026 calendar reflects an effort to rebuild and meet commitments tied to city agreements and the organization’s long-term sustainability.
That makes this season something of a balancing act: part celebration, part test of whether WaterFire can return to a more stable footing.
