New radio schedule welcomes ‘Here & Now’ to Rhode Island and puts local musicians in the spotlight

From new additions to shifting favorites, here’s what you can expect from our updated schedule starting Monday, Nov. 16

Starting Monday, Nov. 16, we’re welcoming new voices to our Ocean State radio dial. You’ll want to tune in for additions across weekdays and weekends – and you’ll also want to be mindful of schedule shifts for current programs, including “Newshour,” “Fresh Air,” “On Point,” “The Moth Radio Hour” and “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!”

New Additions

We’re going international with “Outside Source” from BBC World Service at 11 a.m. on weekdays. Live from the heart of the BBC newsroom, “Outside Source” brings you the latest information about the day’s biggest stories with explanation and reaction from the people involved. Newsmagazine “Here & Now” also joins our weekday lineup with its live, two-hour block from noon to 2 p.m. The national show, produced by NPR and WBUR in Boston, features in-depth news, interviews and conversation with co-hosts Robin Young, Scott Tong and Indira Lakshmanan.

Your weekends are seeing some newcomers, too. “Fresh Air Weekend,” produced by WHYY in Philadelphia and distributed nationally by NPR, appears twice in the lineup – first at 1 p.m. on Saturday, then again at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The Peabody Award-winning show is hosted by longtime public media friends Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley.

And our public media friends wouldn’t be complete without David Greene. His show, “Sports in America with David Greene” from WHYY and PRX, is available twice throughout your weekend: 7 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday (just ahead of fall football). Every week, Greene hosts in-depth conversations with people across the world of sports, from star athletes to fans — like us!

Plus, we’ll have a new local music hour on Saturday evenings. “Ocean State Sessions” kicks off at 6 p.m. with recorded performances by local artists, including our new “Biggest Little Desk” concerts presented by Empire Guitars. We continue grooving well into the evening with “Return to the Source” and “The Soul Show” until 11 p.m.

Fond Farewells

We’re saying goodbye to some of our previously scheduled programs, including:

  • “Q,” produced by CBC (aired weekdays at noon and 10 p.m.)
  • “Think,” produced by KERA (aired Monday through Thursday at 2 p.m., and again at 11 p.m. on weekdays)
  • “Left, Right and Center,” produced by KCRW (aired at 4 p.m. on Saturdays)
  • Audioplays from L.A. Theatre Works (aired between 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturdays)
  • “Planet Money” and “How I Built This,” produced by NPR and Wondery, respectively (aired Sundays at 7 a.m.)
  • “Sound Opinions,” hosted by Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis and distributed nationally by PRX (aired Sundays at noon)
