Hello everyone! My name is Gisele Esquivel and I joined Rhode Island PBS this past fall as the new Early Childhood Education Specialist. One of the things that excite me about this new role is the fact that I get to interact with PBS KIDS content on a regular basis.

Having grown up watching Arthur, Cyberchase, and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, PBS KIDS is a special part of my childhood that I am excited younger generations can still enjoy in new and exciting ways. One new way that I would like to share is the increasing number of content now available in Spanish. PBS KIDS has content in Spanish for children, families, and educators.

Given the growing population of multilingual learners in Rhode Island, many of whom are Spanish-speaking, the need for content and resources in Spanish as well as more languages is evident. From an educator standpoint, this is a matter of equity. Most importantly, from a personal standpoint, as a child who grew up bilingual, it is beautiful to see that my home language is valued on educational TV, while also being recognized as a valuable component of a child’s education.

The coolest part is watching shows like Alma’s Way and hearing colloquial language that is unique to native Spanish speakers and would not be taught in a formal Spanish class setting. I also cannot help but think about my former second grade students who will watch shows like this one and be able to make connections to their everyday life.

Below you will find a list of PBS Resources available in Spanish for children, families, and educators.
