OSM Visits: Glocester
Glocester is a quiet, country-style town with historic roots. Even though we’re surrounded by miles of farmland and woods, our community could not be any closer. Glocester offers miles of hiking trails, boating spots and great fishing. It’s also home to the oldest, continuously operated country store, Brown and Hopkins, plus many antique shops. We’ve also got quirky traditions, such as Elephant Day (keep reading), The Ancients and Horribles Parade and The Scarecrow Festival. Take it from me, Glocester is a great escape from the city-you’ll want to check out!
My go-to activities in town: Dinner at Assados Kitchen and Bar, weekends at Pulaski State Park and coffee at Village Bean.
A place I’d send someone visiting for the first time: Brown and Hopkins is a small country store from the 1800s. I love their penny candy and kitchen section.
Something only a local would know: In 1826, an elephant named Betty, who was traveling with the circus, was shot and killed in the village of Chepachet. Every May, the town has Elephant Day, in honor of Betty.
