A new year has arrived, and 2026 is expected to bring major political, institutional and cultural developments across Rhode Island. From statewide elections and the fate of key hospitals, to international soccer and celebrity speculation, here are six stories to watch:

1. A high-stakes election year

Rhode Island voters will head to the polls in what could be one of the most consequential election cycles in decades. Gov. Dan McKee is still in the race to seek another term, a move that would make him the first governor since the 1800s to serve 10 years if he wins.

The attorney general’s race will also be wide open, with Peter Neronha term-limited out of office. Nationally, the midterm elections could reshape Washington and have ripple effects on federal funding and policy priorities in the Ocean State.

2. Fallout from the Brown University shooting

The gunman who allegedly opened fire at Brown University on Dec. 13 is dead, but the repercussions of the attack are still unfolding. The university has already made changes to its public safety leadership as administrators navigate campus trauma, potential legal exposure and lingering questions about the shooter’s motive.

Further scrutiny and calls for accountability are expected to continue into 2026.

3. An uncertain future for two hospitals

The long-awaited fate of Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital should come to a head in 2026. State officials and health care leaders are awaiting clarity on whether new ownership will take over the struggling facilities.

If a deal does not materialize, the loss or downsizing of the hospitals will put additional strain on Rhode Island’s already stressed health care system.

4. Reality TV puts Rhode Island in the spotlight

Whether residents are fans or critics, reality television is poised to draw national attention to the Ocean State. The Real Housewives of Rhode Island is set to premiere on Bravo, and reaction to the show’s trailer has already sparked debate over how Rhode Island is portrayed.

5. World Cup brings global attention to the region

International eyes will be on southern New England next summer as North America hosts the FIFA World Cup. Matches will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., and one of the participating teams could be based at Bryant University.

State leaders are hoping the tournament delivers a significant tourism and economic boost.

6. Celebrity wedding rumors fuel summer buzz

On a lighter note, tabloid speculation continues around a possible summer wedding for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in Westerly.

Nothing has been confirmed, but if reports prove true, vacationers seeking a place to stay in southern Rhode Island could find themselves shut out.
