Consisting of Peri DeLorenz, Mark Dobbyn, and Erin Lobb Manson, The Whelks deliver a three-part harmony that captivate its listeners and folks passing by. Attending their album release party at Providence’s local dive bar, Nick-A-Nees, was a lively experience! When arriving at the venue we noticed how insanely packed it was. It was shoulder-to-shoulder full of people listening to the live music. The band had a merch table showcasing Erin’s creative Whelks Reverse Mermaid artwork, adding to the festive atmosphere. This was such an awesome party that it didn’t feel like a performance!

As The Whelks took the stage with their violin, upright bass, and guitar, their tunes got everyone moving and shaking. Their vocals and diverse instrumental array were captivating. The track “What’s Good for Us All” from their album Reverse Mermaid, features the steel guitar, whose distinct sound resonates deeply, striking a chord with listeners.

Visiting the Whelks in Warren, RI, we discovered not only their musical talent but also their artistic backgrounds. Peri, a music teacher, helps others improve their musical skills. Mark, a luthier, showed us his workshop where he repairs instruments. Erin honed her skills in printmaking and ceramics, and she also designed the album cover art. Their community supports the local music scene, as seen during their interview filmed at renowned artist, William Schaff Studio, which has been a hub for creatives in the area.

The Whelks are more than just a fantastic sound; they are a trio of unbelievably talented artists. Our time with The Whelks has shown us how creative this state truly is. Keep your ears open at local bars, pubs, and breweries—you might catch The Whelks performing live.
