A manifesto for Tiny Gardens, a ‘visual spectacle’ concerto for percussion, St. Patrick’s Day parades and more

Looking for some tips on what to do this weekend and beyond? We’ve got you covered. Here are a few recommendations from Ocean State Media’s James Baumgartner and Mareva Lindo.

Author Event - Kate Brown “Tiny Gardens Everywhere”

Brown is an environmental scientist at MIT. Her latest book is about the history of people growing food in cities. Starting in the mid-1800s, urban populations were exploding and rural folk brought their agricultural know-how with them to the cities and used food waste, horse manure and more to create the most productive agriculture in history, and she says we could do it again.

Where: Symposium Books, 240 Westminster Street, Providence
When: Thursday, Mar. 12, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Boldness Unbound - “Eternal Rhythm: Percussion Concerto No. 2”

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra performs with soloist Cynthia Yeh on a bevy of percussion instruments, including tympani, vibraphone, marimba, timbale, glockenspiel, tom toms, tam tam, and more. You can expect it to be a visual spectacle, a treat for the ears, with inspiration from blues, jazz, and Indonesian gamelan music. Also on the program: Charles Ives’ Symphony No. 2, which features traditional American music as the basis for its melodies.

Where: Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, New Bedford, MA
When: Saturday, Mar. 14, 7:30 p.m. With a free “open rehearsal” Friday, Mar. 13, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

James learned the basics of audio editing while studying music at Missouri State University. He went on to get a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Art at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he created electronic music, video art and internet-based media art. While at RPI, James went on the air for the first time, hosting an electronic music show on Rensselaer's station, WRPI, but his love of radio came from staying up late so he could hear punk rock on KKFI, the community radio station in Kansas City, Missouri.
