Position: Senior Reporter
Reports to: Managing Editor
Supervises: None
Location: Providence, Rhode Island
Exempt / Non-Exempt:Full Time Non-Exempt

Summary:
The Senior Reporter for Ocean State Media is responsible for news, enterprise and investigative journalism for broadcast and digital platforms covering the communities of southern and western Rhode Island with an emphasis on the beat of business and the economy. The Senior Reporter also works closely with the editorial team in a mentorship and training role to journalists in multiplatform skills as we continue to deepen our cross-platform collaborations at Ocean State Media.

Specific Duties (including but not limited to):

  • Enterprise/Investigative Reporting: Generate ideas, pitch stories, and report long-form stories on issues affecting the communities of southern and western Rhode Island, with an emphasis on business and the economy
  • News Reporting: Coverage of daily news for broadcast and digital channels, including spots and short features
  • Training: The Senior Reporter will be responsible for coaching, mentoring and training journalists in all aspects of multiplatform reporting for TV, Radio and Digital platform
  • Editing: The Senior Reporter will assist as needed as a backup editor
  • Community Engagement: Participate in community partnerships and events as assigned
  • Web Page: Write and post web stories
  • Fundraising: Participate in regular on-air fund drives as assigned
  • Other duties as determined by the Managing Editor and Chief Content Officer

Education / Experience / Qualifications:

  • 10-15 years of reporting experience
  • A demonstrated track record of training, mentoring and leading journalists
  • Excellent writing, reporting and production skills for audio, video and digital platforms
  • Knowledge of regional communities and issues, including a deep, contextual understanding of how local issues resonate in the national arena
  • Excellent news judgement and initiative in pitching story and project ideas and angles
  • Ability to successfully lead editorial projects
  • Excellent writing, reporting and production skills for TV, radio and digital platforms
  • A demonstrated ability to maintain the highest journalistic standards under deadline pressure
  • A passion for working collaboratively with reporters of different backgrounds and skill sets
  • A track record of exhibiting cultural competency in their work and their professional life
  • Knowledge of investigative research tools, such as data wrapper and excel
  • Knowledge of and ability to efficiently conduct records requests and analyze data
  • Competency in written and spoken Spanish and/or Portuguese or other language skills would be helpful

Compensation:
The compensation range for this position is between $70,000 and $93,000.
